Witnesses targeted in offensive online posts

Dor Foundation CEO Tahli Blicblau returned to the commission on Tuesday to discuss the organisation's analysis of offensive social media posts and comments against inquiry witnesses who appeared during the first hearing block.

Out of a sample of 275 offensive posts, Ms Blicblau said about five had been removed from Facebook and about 20 scrubbed from X.

Three of the four TikTok posts reported from the sample were removed, and all eight YouTube posts flagged as harmful remained online.

Ms Blicblau said some material was not removed despite being reported a number of times, including a comment calling for the death of all Jews.

She described the response by social media platforms as "grossly inadequate".

"[The response from platforms is] out of step with normal communal expectations of how people should treat one another," she said.

"Either the [online safety] legislation or policies are not effective or are not being effectively enforced."

The foundation, which was established by former treasurer Josh Frydenberg to combat antisemitism, also conducted a preliminary review of dozens of online comments made against Monday's witnesses, including Bondi Beach terror attack survivor Arsen Ostrovsky.
